Pivotal iQ IT Intelligence - Capita awarded contract to manage Transport for London’s Access and Wide Area Network services

IT Intelligence Bulletin – Capita plc has announced that it has signed a contract with Transport for London (TfL) for the provision and ongoing management of its Access and Wide Area Network services across all TfL sites.

Capita will take delivery responsibility for WAN, LAN, and WiFi networks across over 1,000 TfL sites from August 2018, for an initial period of five years, following a transition period which commences immediately. This initial contract is valued at approximately £80m with an option to extend for up to five further years, and is expected to deliver significant savings of at least £33m to TfL through efficiencies and modernisation of equipment.

The total IFRS 15 transaction price of the contract is £135m, being made up of the initial scope and term, plus a subsequent pre-priced extension. This contract, part of TfL’s Telecommunications and Data Network Strategy, will enable the consolidation of its multiple outsourced contracts into a single, pan-TfL network service contract. It will reduce costs, ensure the ongoing security and reliability of business-critical services, and accelerate time to market for new services across TfL’s London data network.

Under the contract, Capita will transition existing services, undertake a large-scale technical refresh, simplify the complex network infrastructure and operate, monitor and maintain the new network infrastructure. As part of this, the equipment used to provide free public WiFi across the London Underground network will be reviewed and refreshed. This will help allow even more people to connect more quickly and check their emails, plan their journeys and stay in contact while on the move.

Jonathan Lewis, Chief Executive Officer, Capita plc, said: “Our extensive networking solutions expertise and track record of undertaking large-scale critical network implementations for clients means we are well equipped to support the consolidation of TfL’s data network. We look forward to fully supporting TfL as they consolidate, transform and upscale their network services, essential to supporting mission critical data services across the London transport network.”

“This new five-year contract will help consolidate our existing network infrastructure and allow TfL to deliver improvements which will make it work more efficiently for our needs. It will also deliver significant financial savings which we can then directly reinvest in improving transport in London,” commented Shashi Verma, Chief Technology Officer, TfL.
